Whale Watching off Grand Turk

Watching humpback whales breach the azure waters of the Caribbean with their babies will take your breath away. These magnificent creatures fill the shallows off Grand Turk, the capital of Turks & Caicos, every February-April. This is when they migrate south to breed and birth their young in safe coastal areas, less than 3 miles from the shore. If you're here that time of year, be sure to take the 30-minute flight from Providenciales Airport (PLS), and book a whale watching tour with a local provider.

Whale Birthing Season

The best time of year to spot whales in Turks & Caicos is their birthing season, February through April. This is because humpbacks migrate yearly from polar waters to breed and birth along the warm coasts of the Caribbean. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a mother and her calf together! And if you’re snorkeling or diving, be sure to listen for the long, underwater songs of the males.

  • When’s the best time to see the whales, & what’s their migration path?

Humpback Whales migrate from polar waters, where they feed on small fish, to the warm Caribbean every spring to breed and give birth. They do so because the waters are ideal, with shallow coastal areas to safely raise their young before their long migration, thousands of miles back to the north.
  • What kind of whales will I see?

The migratory Humpback Whale is most common, known scientifically as Megaptera Novaeangliae. They reach sizes of up to 15 meters, or 50 feet, and live to be 70 years old or more. Sometimes they jump fully from the water, putting on majestic displays over the blue Caribbean, then slapping their flippers or tail on the surface.
